The artificial intelligence arena is rapidly evolving, with chatbots emerging as potent communication, collaboration, and data retrieval instruments. While OpenAI's ChatGPT has been a focal point, a plethora of alternatives are making their presence felt in the industry, each offering distinct features and capabilities. The AI chatbot universe, with players like Anthropic's Claude 2, Perplexity AI, Bing Chat, Google Bard, and the budding Quora Poe, is more vibrant and varied than ever.

Claude 2: The Dynamic Digital Assistant

Anthropic's newest model, Claude 2, is gaining momentum with its superior performance, extended responses, and increased accessibility via both API and its beta website, claude.ai. Celebrated for its conversational fluency, lucid explanations, and minimized harmful outputs, Claude 2 emerges as a dynamic and engaging digital assistant. It can process up to 100K tokens in a single prompt and navigate through comprehensive technical documentation or even entire books. Its proficiency in coding is remarkable, achieving a 71.2% score on the Codex HumanEval, a substantial improvement from its predecessor. Platforms like Jasper.ai are already leveraging their prowess for long-form, low-latency applications.

Perplexity AI: The Hybrid Search Engine Chatbot

Established by ex-Google AI engineers, Perplexity AI is an AI-driven search engine and chatbot that utilizes large language models, specifically OpenAI’s GPT technology. Perplexity AI presents a unique fusion of search engine and chatbot functionalities by delivering precise and exhaustive responses to user queries in real time. Its platform offers features like real-time web search, PDF access, and source citation, distinguishing it in terms of accuracy, transparency, and usability. Although still in its early stages, Perplexity AI envisions a future where it can generate code, construct tables, and solve intricate math problems.

Bing Chat: Microsoft's Linguistic Maestro

A product of Microsoft's extensive AI research, Bing Chat (requires Microsoft Edge Browser) provides seamless integration with the Bing search engine, offering real-time web information. Its forte lies in its advanced natural language processing capabilities, comprehending context, language subtleties, and regional dialects. Bing Chat transcends the traditional chatbot, an ever-evolving platform that integrates smoothly with the broader Microsoft ecosystem, from Excel to Cortana. It presents limitless customization opportunities for businesses, from customer interactions to inventive marketing strategies.

Google Bard: The Conversational Virtuoso

Google Bard, a testament to Google's proficiency in search and machine learning, offers users an accurate, interactive, and human-like conversational experience. Its human-like demeanor makes interactions feel authentic, and its collaborative features enable users to brainstorm, outline tasks, and generate content effortlessly. As AI progresses, Google Bard exemplifies the potential of chatbots in daily interactions, setting a standard for future AI chatbot advancements.

Quora Poe: The Companion for Knowledge Seekers

Quora Poe, a spin-off of the popular Q&A platform Quora, is engineered to leverage the collective intelligence of its extensive user base. Utilizing advanced AI algorithms, Poe provides users with insightful answers, drawing from the rich knowledge pool shared by Quora's community. With an emphasis on accuracy and depth, Poe ensures that users receive thorough responses to their queries. Its integration with the main Quora platform provides users access to diverse perspectives, making it an invaluable tool for those seeking a comprehensive understanding of any topic.

Adobe Firefly: Generative AI for Creatives - Adobe Firefly

I added Adobe Firefly to this list because of its text-to-image capabilities, and as business users, you probably already use some of the Adobe Tools. Perhaps the easiest of all the GenAI tools is a generative AI-powered content creation tool developed by Adobe. It allows users to experiment, imagine, and create a vast array of images. With Firefly, users can:

  • Text to Image: Generate images from detailed text descriptions.

  • Generative Fill: Use a brush to either remove objects or paint in new ones.

  • Text Effects: Apply styles or textures to words and phrases.

  • Generative Recolor: Produce color variations of vector artwork.

  • 3D to Image: Generate images from the interactive positioning of 3D elements.

  • Extend Image: Change the aspect ratio of an image with just one click.

Adobe's approach to generative AI places creators at the forefront. Their mission is to provide creators with every advantage, creatively and practically. As Firefly continues to evolve, Adobe aims to work closely with the creative community to develop technology that enhances the creative process. Once Firefly moves out of its beta stage, creators can use content generated in Firefly for commercial purposes. Adobe is also committed to setting the standard for responsibility in generative AI, advocating for accountability, transparency, and responsibility.

Firefly's generative AI capabilities can also be found inside various Adobe apps, allowing users to make transformations in seconds. These integrations include Generative Fill in Photoshop, Generative Recolor in Illustrator, and Text-to-image and text effects in Adobe Express.

You can find the Adobe Firefly Beta here.

In Conclusion

The AI chatbot universe is expansive and diverse. While ChatGPT has its strengths, competitors like Claude 2, Perplexity AI, Bing Chat, Google Bard, and Poe offer unique features and capabilities that meet varying user needs. As technology propels forward, the potential of these chatbots will continue to grow, heralding a future where human-AI interactions are seamless, intuitive, and enriching.

Tip of the Week: ChatGPT Custom Instructions

Custom Instructions is a cross-session memory feature that allows ChatGPT to retain essential instructions across chat sessions. This means you can give standing instructions to the AI model, which it will recall and apply in subsequent chats. This eliminates the need for repetitive explanations, making your interaction with ChatGPT more efficient and personalized.

The Custom Instructions feature is currently available to ChatGPT Plus users, with plans to roll it out to all users. This feature has been a significant step towards personalizing the ChatGPT experience since its launch in November 2022.

How to Enable Custom Instructions in ChatGPT Plus

To enable the Custom Instructions feature, follow these steps:

  1. Open the ChatGPT website and click on your name in the bottom left corner of the page.

  2. Click on Settings & Beta.

  3. In the pop-up menu, click on Beta features on the left panel.

  4. Toggle Custom instructions to turn on the feature and exit the pop-up.

Once enabled, you can provide instructions for ChatGPT to retain across all your chat sessions. You can do this by clicking on your name in the bottom left corner of the page, then clicking on the new option labeled Custom instructions. This will reveal the Custom Instructions editor, where you can provide information about yourself and specify how you want ChatGPT's response.

Applications of Custom Instructions in ChatGPT Plus

The applications of the Custom Instructions feature are only limited by your imagination. Here are some ways you can use this feature:

  • Provide basic personal details like your name, occupation, and location so ChatGPT can refer to you correctly in each session and better customize responses to be suited to your occupation and location.

  • Set preferences for writing tone, so ChatGPT knows how to write when generating different kinds of writeup.

  • Define acronyms and abbreviations you frequently use to enable ChatGPT to know their meaning in all chats.

  • Give an overview of your areas of expertise and interest that ChatGPT can use to frame responses suited to your interest and level of expertise.

  • Outline relevant beliefs, values, or ethical stances you hold that should guide ChatGPT's responses.

While this feature encourages personalization, avoiding providing sensitive information to ChatGPT, even in the instructions' editor is important. If you have plugins turned on for your account, third-party plugin developers can access any sensitive information you share using the feature.

Here are my Custom Instructions that you can use for inspiration:
