How to Complete Complex Projects with AI Agents

A systematic approach to automation ChatGPT Agent Mode, Manus.iM, and Google Deep Research

A structured prompt framework standardizes each step of production. It breaks newsletter creation into discrete, repeatable phases that run across platforms. I refined it with ChatGPT Custom GPTs and now use agentic systems for further automation.

The prompt was developed through iterative testing with Claude and refined using output‑quality metrics. It includes a scoring system that produces a quantitative measure of output quality.

I used Claude Workbench to refine outputs and validate the approach before standardizing it.

The Friday newsletter framework has eight phases, each with defined deliverables and quality checkpoints. The process preserves structure, tone, and quality across topics and platforms.

The master prompt runs ~2,500 words across eight phases. I include real examples from my workflow—detail matters if you want repeatable results.

Because agentic systems are goal‑oriented, agents work through each phase toward a finished draft without step‑by‑step prompting—an improvement over my prior Custom GPT approach. In practice, the agent delivers an ~80% complete draft.

Let’s dissect the process so you can see how I provide my instructions that you can alter for your purposes.

Phase 1: Topic Research & Validation

The research phase establishes credibility through systematic fact-checking and source verification. The AI receives specific instructions to locate 3-5 credible sources published within the last 30 days, verify all statistics with primary sources, and identify real companies with documented implementations.

I define research criteria—3–5 credible sources from the last 30 days. Adjust as needed (e.g., historical surveys or trend‑based queries).

Example Research Prompt Section

When given a topic, conduct thorough research:

1. Find 3-5 credible sources from the last 30 days
2. Verify all statistics and claims with primary sources
3. Identify REAL companies with ACTUAL implementations (no hypotheticals)
4. Document specific investments, metrics, and outcomes with source links
5. Focus on current, verifiable business developments

This approach eliminates the common problem of AI-generated content that relies on outdated information or hypothetical examples. By requiring recent sources and real implementations, the newsletter maintains relevance and credibility. Though you should always check the sources—even with this protocol, hallucinations sometimes slip through.

Phase 2: Executive Summary Structure

This phase defines a specific format for the newsletter's executive summary: one opening paragraph followed by three bullet points with supporting evidence and hyperlinks.

This standardized structure improves consistency across editions(I iterate the format over time).

Most failures come from missing output formats. Without a template, teams copy‑paste and reformat later—avoidable rework.

Truth be told, I’m always tweaking—even when I provide the format. But here’s an example of how I provided the format as part of my prompt.

The systematic approach to complex project reproduction relies on understanding the unique capabilities of different agentic platforms. This analysis focuses on three primary platforms: ChatGPT Agent Mode, Manus.iM, and Google Deep Research, each offering distinct advantages for different aspects of project automation.

ChatGPT Agent Mode: Comprehensive Workflow Orchestration

ChatGPT Agent Mode represents the most versatile platform for complex project reproduction. Its agent capabilities enable autonomous task execution, iterative refinement, and multi-step workflow management without constant human intervention.

Creating a copy of the newsletter using Agent Mode is not as automated as some of my other methods but because it’s got so many “memories” of what I’ve wrote it usually captures my voice the best.

Key Capabilities:

Manus.iM excels in orchestrating complex, multi-phase projects that require sophisticated workflow management and integration across multiple tools and data sources. This is my go-to for creating my newsletters.

I actually wrote this edition with Manus but it required a good bit of editing and I added the screenshots. But still provided a huge time savings.

Google Deep Research offers powerful research capabilities but with notable limitations for comprehensive project reproduction. It’s best for detailed research reports that you then edit in Google Docs.

  • Deep Research: Excellent at comprehensive information gathering and source analysis

  • Fact Verification: Strong capability for cross-referencing and validating information

  • Academic Sources: Superior access to scholarly and technical publications

  • Data Synthesis: Effective at combining information from multiple complex sources

Limitations:

  • Single-Phase Focus: Primarily designed for research tasks, limited content generation capabilities

  • No Workflow Management: Cannot orchestrate multi-step projects independently

  • Limited Output Formats: Restricted to research summaries and analysis, not full content creation

  • Manual Integration Required: Requires human intervention to integrate research into broader workflows

  • No Iterative Refinement: Cannot automatically improve output based on quality feedback

Optimal Use Cases:

  • Initial research phase of complex projects

  • Summarizing data into reports

  • Fact-checking and source verification

  • Academic and technical research requiring deep analysis

Platform Selection Strategy

The most effective approach combines these platforms based on project phase requirements:

Phase 1 - Research: Google Deep Research for comprehensive information gathering, followed by ChatGPT Agent Mode or Manus.IM for synthesis and organization. I normally would do this if I was creating a comprehensive document or report like a Prompt Engineering Guide, or a recap of the latest AI trends.
