Do you remember when Google first went live on the Internet?
I do, September 4, 1998. Man that makes me feel old.
Today, though, its front page often resembles a digital billboard filled with ads and questionable listings.
As a result, many now turn to AI-driven search tools that deliver more direct answers. It may be time to consider doing the same.
I have and will discuss the ones I am using today, including You.com, Perplexity.ai, ChatGPT Search, and AI Copilot.
Skip to the end if you haven’t heard before which one I favor and why.

How to use AI to sift through search results to get to the best answers
My opening remarks on Google may sound a little harsh, but they come from a place of frustration: they are one of the most advanced AI developers on the planet, but their search has yet to make the leap from old-school indexes and algorithms, to an effective 100% AI-powered search.
When they do implement an AI-powered search, the results are pretty good. However, it’s unpredictable when you'll receive AI-enhanced search results and when you won’t. My rule of thumb is to ask a question when I can, so that it invokes the search results powered by their LLM, Gemini.
AI-Powered Search Results in Google.
The Google alternative is to use Google Gemini directly. In this case, I am working on comparing systems to do automated outreach for advertising in my newsletters, that are part of the Artificially Intelligent Enterprise Network.
ChatGPT Search
I use ChatGPT Search every day. It can feel a bit unintuitive—or perhaps, depending on your perspective, completely intuitive. By using ChatGPT, you can access web searches via the command line prompt.
ChatGPT-based search offers a direct way to gather information. By phrasing questions in plain language, users skip the usual back-and-forth with keywords. The system quickly delivers a concise answer, saving time for more pressing tasks.
Perplexity: Fast AI-Powered Search
When I first started using AI-powered search, Perplexity was light-years ahead of its competitors. It was fast, and so novel that I recommended it to everyone. You can even switch your browser to Perplexity for default search, using their Chrome extension.
While Perplexity leverages Claude's superior capabilities for prose and dialogue generation, its approach to source material can sometimes be overly inclusive. The platform tends to incorporate extensive details found online that may not always directly address the research question at hand.
Despite this limitation, Perplexity maintains high standards of transparency by providing citations and source URLs, enabling users to verify the accuracy of its outputs. This combination of speed, sophisticated AI integration, and transparent sourcing makes it a powerful tool for information seeking, even if users need to exercise discretion in evaluating the relevance of its comprehensive responses.
My Favorite: You.com for Agentic Search and Research
You.com's "Research" feature is a game-changer for in-depth information gathering. By analyzing up to 200 sources per query, it provides comprehensive insights and enables real-time source verification.
Specialized AI Assistants, like the Research Assistant and Genius Assistant, further enhance this capability by helping users generate thorough articles and solve complex problems.
YouPro, a premium subscription service, offers users access to customizable AI modes and the ability to switch between leading AI models like GPT-4, OpenAI 01-preview, Claude, and Gemini.
I am a fan of You.com because it combines the best features from top AI models, and it provides a way to use all my most-used models from one interface, providing a unique and powerful user experience.
